A Black-Out Box is a container in your house that stores lightweight items that people need in case of long-term power outage.
Having one reduces the chance of being unprepared during a power outage. The purpose is to have as many items already stored so that you will be prepared should the typically unforeseen blackouts, storms or other disasters happen.
A blackout box is a device that helps you preserve power during a power outage. These devices are relatively inexpensive and can be found in many stores.
You can buy an inexpensive black out box at any hardware store or department store.
The box is made of sturdy metal and comes with a handle so you can easily carry it with you if you need to evacuate due to a natural disaster like a hurricane.
Every Family Needs a Black Out Box for Power Outages
Every family should have a black out box for power outages because any power failure can cause extensive damage to your refrigerator, freezer and other household appliances.
Without power, your food could quickly spoil and cause sickness for your family. In addition to food, a black out box will store other items that are important to your family.
Quickly Prepare for a Black Out by Building Your Own Emergency Kit
You can build your own emergency kit by assembling a black out box. This is a great way to prepare for any type of emergency or disaster.
It’s best to make your own emergency kit because most pre-made kits you can buy at big box stores do not contain the types of items that I am going to suggest for your blackout box.
What is in a Black Out Box?
Food and Water
Your black out box should always contain some basic essentials. Water and canned food are critical for long term storage.
If the power outage lasts more than 5 days, your family may be required to use water supplies that they have stored at home and their own stored food. It would be wise to include plastic water bottles as well as containers of water in your black box.
1. Flashlight and Extra Batteries
You should have at least two flashlights and at least 1 extra set of batteries each in your home. Locate a flashlight in your black out box that is powered by hand cranking or solar power.
If the power outage lasts more than a week, you will need to find alternative ways to power flashlights if you’re using flashlights that need batteries.
I suggest buying solar powered hand crank flashlights so that when the sun goes down and without electricity, there’s still light for you and your family.
2. Battery Powered Radio
Another important item to have in your black out box is a battery powered radio. This is a great item to have in your emergency kit because if you’re stranded in the middle of the night or if there’s an extended blackout, you’ll be able to stay connected with the outside world if you are unable to call 911 (if you’d want to…).
If you are forced to evacuate or get out of your home, it’s best to have a radio that has an antenna so others can hear your local emergency broadcast.
That way you can keep in touch with like minded people – and that could be your key to survival in a long term situation.
Some radio are hand crank powered and are also solar powered so you can charge them if you can set them outside in the sun.
One of the most important items in your emergency kit is food and water. A small amount of food will be critical for your family as well as their pets during a power outage.
As any food won’t be refrigerated, you have to choose wisely to make sure you don’t poison yourself (or your family!). Pick up some canned foods like soup, rice and pasta to add to your black out box.
Make sure they are always with you in a blackout so that you won’t have to go out to get them if you need to hide somewhere or get away from a natural disaster or power outage.
Toothpaste, toothbrushes and toothpaste, soap and shampoo are important to have in your emergency kit.
It might not seem important, but if you’re forced to get out and take shelter somewhere during an emergency, these items will help you feel more comfortable if you are unable to take showers or wash your clothes.
Small measures like this can give you a psychological edge and make you feel like you are doing something to keep your family safe.
5. First Aid Kit
A basic first aid kit should be included in your emergency kit.
The contents of a first aid kit should include the essentials like bandages, medicine and ointments.
6. A means of protection
It might not be nice to think about, but if the power goes out long term, things might start to get messy. So you need to find some way to protect your family and your belongings.
Of course the options available to you depend on where you live, but make sure you have some kind of weapon on hand.
A baseball bat, a small gun or just a knife are all good options to have for protection.
If there is a long-term power outage, you need to be prepared with a black out box. This is an easy way to gather many important items for your family in case the power goes out for more than 5 days. It’s helpful to have these items around so that if the electricity does go out one day you’re prepared.
My family and I hope that we never have to use our black out box, but knowing that it’s there in the event of an emergency is a relief. It’s not about preparing for the worst-case scenario, but staying one step ahead if anything ever does happen.
